Sorting Features of an Explanation Text

English Y3/4: Discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
English Y5/6: Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own

Differentiation:

Beginner Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text as: Questions and Dear Sir.  Aimed at Year 3 Emerging.

Easy Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text such as: Next and fiction.  Aimed at Year 3 Developing.

Tricky Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text such as: Subheadings and headline.  Aimed at Year 3 Secure/Year 4 Emerging.

Expert Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text such as: Glossary and speech.  Aimed at Year 4 Developing.

Brainbox Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text such as: Labelled diagrams and verses.  Aimed at Year 4 Secure/Year 5 Emerging.

Genius Sorting features needed and not needed in an explanation text such as: Cause/effect conjunctions and special offers.  Aimed at Year 5 Developing.

How to Play:

Here are two suggestions for playing this sorting game:

• Spread the cards out on the table – children sort the cards into the correct order (in a group/pair/individually).
• Share the cards out equally in a group. Going around the circle, each child takes a turn to place a card in the correct order.
